The Elphinstone Aero Club was founded as a not-for-profit society in 1956 in order to build an airstrip on the Sechelt Peninsula. Appropriate level land was sought out, assembled and cleared by the volunteer members of the Club, using donated equipment and materials. The first landing of an aircraft on the new airstrip was by a Fleet Canuck (a Canadian-made airplane), registration CF-DPG, owned and operated by Roy Brett. Later, the airstrip was turned over the the Villages of Sechelt and Gibsons in order to receive federal funding for the paving of the runway.
Today
Today, the Sunshine Coast Regional Airport is home to many businesses and organizations, employing many local residents.
